Team Wins National Tournament
The Tampa Bay Sun Bowl is one of the nation’s most prestigious
soccer tournaments. Accepting only the best teams from each
state, the Sun Bowl brings together the nation’s top
players to display their soccer talents. Since 2001, no team
from Michigan had made it to the finals of the Sun Bowl. This
year, our CA United U17 Boys not only made it to the final,
they won!
CA began the tournament with pool play, racking up an impressive
3-0-1 record against teams from Texas, Florida, New York, and
Wisconsin. One pool play victory was over the Wisconsin state
champions. In the quarterfinals, CA defeated a team from Alabama,
the Capital City Streaks, by a 4-1 margin. CA continued its
winning ways in the semifinals, with a 2-0 victory over Ohio’s
Classics Hammer FC. This set up a tense and emotional battle
with BRYC Team Harkes from Virginia in the final. Peter Houston
and Alex Potter scored early goals to give CA a 2-0 first half
lead, but Team Harkes came storming back to tie the game at
2-2 and force overtime. The match was in question until a dramatic
strike from 20 yards out by Faread Jamalifard gave CA the championship.
Faread was also named Most Valuable Player after an outstanding
tournament.
