CA United ’89 Boys Team Wins International Futsal Tournament

The CA United U-16 boys team traveled to Port Huron recently and captured the championship of the Blue Water "Ice Jam" International Futsal Tournament. Facing competition from both the American and Canadian sides of the Blue Water Bridge, the team won each of its five matches in convincing fashion, outpacing their opponents in the title match by a score of 11-4.

Futsal, the five-a-side version of indoor soccer recognized by the sport's governing body, was developed in South America during the 1930's, and is growing in popularity around the world. Led in scoring by Ben Skole from Okemos, Sam Callow from Grand Ledge, and R.J. Rueckert from Lansing, the CA United team also posted two shutouts in the fast-paced competition behind the goalkeeping of Kyle Miller from Okemos. Other team members participating were Stefan Hanish and Tomas Murphy from East Lansing; Michael Gukasov from Holt; Jordan Spearman from Lansing; and Brian Firestone, Jonathan Kagey, and Eric Maier from Okemos.
