CA
United U12 Girls – Moving Forward Together
Congratulations
to the CA United U12 Girls Program for recent successes.
In the Palatine Celtic Cup Tournament, the U12 girls were
represented by Australia and Ghana as it was a 11 v 11 tournament,
both teams progressed to the final where they played each other
and although on the day there was a winner, that weekend they
proved that they were all winners as the quality of soccer
from both teams was very good and the team spirit was even
better.
So from one tournament to the next, and the standards did
not drop for the Capital Area Classic, with the U12 girls being
represented by Australia, Ghana and Mexico. Again all
teams produced some great soccer and all teams finished with
undefeated records.
To add to all of the recent success, the U12s qualified for
the quarter final stage of The Ford Cup State Tournament, due
to take place on Saturday 30th September 11:30am at Saginaw
Township Soccer Complex.
Well done girls, if it wasn't for the attitude, ability, dedication
and team spirit of this group, none of the previous successes
could have been achieved.

Lowell, MI. - CA United U11 girls Poland won their age group

accomplish this they had to defeat a much larger U-12 team
from Grand Rapids (SCOR Soccer Club) in a sudden death shootout.
Along the way team Poland also faced the other half of the
U11 girls program, team Czech in the semi-finals. Congratulations
to both teams on a great showing at the tournament.
Team Poland members include: Cassie McManus
and Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Kayla Jacob and Cassidy
Hass of Mason, Aren Cupp and Emma Webster of Holt, Morgan Gray,

Coach Gus Flores who is assisted by Vern Myers and Collin Frank.
U12 Boys Place Second at Warrior Classic

Dayton, OH. – Memorial Day weekend was a bittersweet
time for the boys of the U12 first team. After completing group
play with a 3-0 record, the boys ran away with their semi-final,
defeating Waza FC 3-0. The final saw a very even first half
end 0-0. The CA boys put the pressure on in the second half
hitting the post several times, along with many other great
scoring chances. CA kept the pressure on and their opponent
was reduced to only a few counter attacking opportunities.
After converting on one of their few good chances in the half,
the Troy Trojans were able to add a second goal in the final
minutes as the CA boys were pushed up in an effort to even
the score. In the end, it was a 0-2 loss that was not indicative
of a second half dominated by CA United. Congratulations on
a great weekend boys, you were a pleasure to watch play, and
you represented the club with a lot of class!
The team is coached by Ryan Holser.

United U14 Girls place 2nd at PRF United Cup

Cincinnati, OH. – On a weekend that saw rain, snow
and hail, a lightning delay and even sunny skies, the CA
United U14 girls started their spring season with a second
place finish at the PRF United Cup.
The weekend started with a 5:45am wake up call for a team jog,
to prepare for their 8am game. After going 3-0 in group play,
with 13 goals for and 0 against, the girls ran into a very tough,
and well coached team from the Greater Toledo Futbol Club. The
final match was played in rain and hail, and saw CA United lose
1-3.
All things considered, it was a great way to start the spring
season. “Obviously you would like to win as many championships
as possible, but to start the spring this way is very exciting” said
head coach Dan Jury. “The tournament allowed the girls
to build some confidence through group play, but also have some
of their weaknesses exposed in the final. I was able to see all
of the things I needed to as I prepare our spring training program.
I also saw that the CA United winter training program paid off
with an increased level of confidence in individual players.”
Team members include: April Sutliff of Banister,
Dani Carter, Erin Lucian and Taryn Seldon of DeWitt, Lauren
Gibson and Kelsey Mullen of Okemos, Sarah Klein of Waverly,
Liz Baker, Shelby Deimling, Torey Deimling, and Taylor Parker
of Haslett, Katie Jobolonski of E. Lansing, Bridget Bienz,

United 89’ RunnerUp at National Futsal Tournament
The U17’s played valiantly in the high school boys
division of the Super F League National Championships. They
finished second losing in the finals to the KCKickers by
a score of 9-8. They went 3-0 in pool play. One of the teams
they defeated was the Kolping Kicks, a St. Louis team that won
the tournament two years ago and went on to finish runner-up at the US Futsal
Championships in California. In the semi-finals, CA defeated Kansas State Cup
Winner Blue Valley Stars 89 in a shoot-out. This was a very impressive tournament
drawing teams from Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Iowa, Omaha, Dallas, San Diego,
and of course, several from the KC metro area and Mid-Michigan. CA United drew
rave reviews by coaches, referees, and tournament officials for its style of
play and its sportsmanship. Another benefit of the trip was a visit to emerging
NCAA soccer power Bradley University and their state-of-the-art soccer facilities.
Coach Jim DeRose met the boys and talked about the college recruiting process.

Coach Bobby Clark Visits CA United
For CA United’s 2005 annual clinic and annual meeting, we
were lucky enough to have the distinguished Bobby Clark, men’s soccer
coach at Notre Dame University, as our special guest.
Coach Clark ran two training sessions at the Summit for our club. The morning
session was for CA coaches. Bill Boyle’s U17 Boys team, fresh off their
Sun Bowl Championship, was chosen to participate. Coach Clark ran a defensive
session, building from the first defender up to 8 vs. 8. This session was done
at a very high level of technical and tactical speed.
The afternoon session featured Nicu Milotin’s U13 Boys team. Joining the
CA coaches for this session were CASL coaches. CASL coaches gave a very good
showing by having over 30 participants there. Coach Clark worked on attacking
play for this session. Players worked on their decision-making on the ball and
what options they need to chose from. After the afternoon session Coach Clark
had a Question/Answer session with the CASL coaches for about an hour. To end
Coach Clark’s day he was the keynote speaker for CA’s annual meeting.
He talked for an hour about college recruiting and how players should pick
a college.
Overall Coach Clark gave two great sessions and a very informative speech.
We were glad to have this coaching legend be part of our annual clinic/meeting.

U18 Girls shine at Germantown Invitational
The U18 girls won the U19 Bronze Division of the Germantown
Invitational Tournament in Memphis Tennessee this past weekend.
The tournament featured teams from throughout the country
and Canada. The team defeated TFC 89 of Texas, 1-0 on a Mattea
Brandenburg (Mason) goal.
CA tied Springfield SC (Missouri), 1-1 on Saturday afternoon
which was enough to win the 3-team division. Becky Marton (W'ston)
scored the team's goal on an absolute screamer from 20 yards
within the first 30 seconds of the game. Although the team
dominated the semifinal against MC United Rowdies (Missouri),
the match was headed for overtime until Ashley Scouten (Holt)
rose to meet Jenny Stewart's (Mason) cross and nodded home
over a taller defender only 4 minutes from time. Marton scored
the clincher 2 minutes later.
The final was a close battle against a very
strong, fast, physical Starfire Premier (Ohio). Jessica Clarke
got the only goal we needed in the 25th minute when she timed
her run to meet a corner kick. Missy Mohr (Holt) superbly marshaled
the defense, although GK Amanda Mellon (Mason) had to make
2 excellent reaction saves to seal the win. The win closed
out a successful fall season; the team won the NSR tournament
in August, reached the finals of the Palatine Cup, and finished
tied for second in D1 of the Premier League. The team finished
with an over all record of 14-4-5.

United Encounters Manchester United
On Sunday, July 25, 2004 over 170 members of the
CA United family traveled to Chicago to watch a “Champions
World” series match between Manchester United ( England)
and Bayern Munich ( Germany).
The match, which was held at Soldier Field, was played to
a 0-0 draw. The game was decided on penalty kicks by a 4-2
margin in favor of Bayern Munich, largely due to two saves
by 2002 World Cup MVP keeper Oliver Kahn. Our CA United group
left Lansing at 9:15 a.m. via 3 chartered buses, and didn’t arrive back
home until after midnight. But it was worth it to enjoy world caliber play in
person. One thrilled spectator was Heather from our U-13 girls team, who said, “It
was a really long bus trip, but it was worth it see such awesome soccer. The
shootout was my favorite part, because it was so intense. I really enjoyed my
day.”
A recap of the game can be found here and
information about the 2004 tour can be found here.
This is the second consecutive year that CA United members have caravanned to
watch the Champions World tour. We are hoping to assemble an even larger group
again next year!

DeRose
Memorial Scholarships Awarded
On May 16, 2003, CA United lost one of its fine young
players when Doug DeRose, a member of the U-14 Boys Team and a
student at Mason Middle School , was killed in a vehicle accident
while he was jogging. Doug's teammates attended his funeral
in their CA United uniforms and served as an honor guard at his
burial. A year later our club paused to remember him with
the awarding of the First Annual Doug DeRose Scholarships.
Gathering just inside the gates of the Kenneth Hope Soccer Complex,
we dedicated a new maple tree planted in Doug's honor last Fall. We
also recognized Alexis Louth, a player from Holt on Coach Johanna
Johnson's U-14 White team, and Lou Petroni, a player from East
Lansing on Coach Dan Zolkowski's U-14 Blue team, as the first winners
of $200 scholarships given in Doug DeRose's memory.
These scholarships will be given each year to a male and female
player within our club in the age group Doug was in at the time
of his death. His zest
for life, his all-out commitment to improving himself as an athlete, his flair
for keeping his teammates loose, and his broad smile will all be kept alive as
our CA United Club commemorates his life through these annual awards.

World Cup Superstar Kristine Lilly Visits CA United
CA United hosted US women's national team soccer star Kristine Lilly
in Lansing on Saturday, February 7, 2004. Ms. Lilly is the third leading scorer
in US soccer history, has played on two World Cup championship teams, and has
earned an Olympic gold medal. Ms. Lilly is training with the Women's National
Team as it prepares for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
About 40 CASL soccer players participated in the 1½-hour clinic Ms. Lilly
ran at SoccerZone on Saturday morning. Enrollment in the clinic was on a first
come first served basis. About 10 very anxious participants braved the winter
weather to line up outside at 7 AM to make sure they would have a chance to join
the clinic!
During the afternoon, Ms. Lilly put on a series of clinics for CA United teams.
One team took the field at a time, while the rest of the club was able to watch
the session and hear Ms. Lilly's instructions via microphone. The participants
had a chance to go through several drills with her as well as participate in
a scrimmage. The girls were thrilled to have the chance to play soccer with one
of the world's greatest players!
Ms. Lilly's visit ended with her speaking at CA United's annual meeting. She
welcomed the opportunity to share her experiences with CA families and friends
and inspired the young soccer players in attendance.
Please support the US Women's National team as it prepares for the Athens Olympics.
Several friendly games will be broadcast this summer. You can find the game and
TV schedule at: www.ussoccer.com. You
